The San Diego (EV) Charger List
Phil Karn
Last updated: 18 Aug 2003

Here is my list of public inductive EV chargers in San Diego county. I started with the list from the now-defunct Edison EV, reformatted it and added my personal notes.

Note: as of August 15, 2003 I no longer have an EV1, and I am no longer maintaining this list. Most of the EV1s were leased for 3 year terms, and GM has refused to renew them. So many of these sites are probably being taken out of service. The few that have been converted to small paddle inductive will continue to be useful for the small number of Toyota RAV4-EVs produced before Toyota also stopped EV production.

The list is sorted in order of increasing Thomas Brothers' map page and grid numbers.

I have included Mapblast and Yahoo maps where possible.

Except as otherwise indicated, all chargers are accessible and operating 24 hours/day.

Chargers marked as "Gen2+" have small paddles. An adapter is required for use with EV1s.

Chargers supplied with 240v generally charge about 15% faster than those supplied with 208v. For details, click here.

If you have any contributions, comments or corrections, please email me. I am especially interested in feedback from anyone who had trouble finding a charger using the instructions given here, or who can give better and/or simpler directions to a site.

Note to non-EV drivers: the verb "ice", as used in these listings, is an acronym that stands for "internal combustion engine". To say "I got iced" means that you arrived at a charger only to find an ordinary gasoline-powered car (typically a big ugly sport-utility vehicle)  parked there  illegally, blocking access to the charger. It's a serious, ongoing problem at many charging sites.

GPS coordinates marked with an asterisk (*) were resurveyed after termination of GPS Selective Availability on May 1, 2000. I.e., these readings should be much more accurate.

Credits: Risa Baron of San Diego Gas & Electric commissioned Ted Walton to photograph every public charging site in SDG&E's territory. Many thanks to Risa for providing them to me. Michelle Thompson navigated and collected data on my North County tour. Cecil McLester contributed an entry. And Dave Kirkpatrick of Saturn of West 78 gave me their business hours and suggested some of the "things to do while you're waiting" at the various Saturn dealers.
