• 32-bit address space (IPv4)

  • written as 4 bytes in “dotted decimal” format, e.g., 129.46.101.170

• Maximum datagram size: 64KB

• Best-effort delivery service, optional QOS

• Fragmentation/reassembly for subnets with smaller packet size limits
