IP Security (IPSEC)

• Started in IETF circa 1992

  • architecture similar to earlier govt network layer security work for ISO CLNP

• Unusually long gestation period

  • reflects creeping featurism, committee design, excessive generality (imho)

• Most useful for virtual private networks, “road warrier” access to closed corporate network through firewall
